  5.
  6.                           With foxes abroad
  7.                          Few ducks can afford
  8.                    To leave a new egg in the nest,
  9.                         And should they do so
  10.                            They usually go
  11.                For it's duck eggs that foxes like best.
  12.                          And Desmond the duck
  13.                         Had awfully bad luck,
  14.                        Even before he was born,
  15.                        Whilst still in his egg
  16.                      With his nose round his leg
  17.                    A fox came and took him at dawn.
  18.                         Unaware of his plight
  19.                       And the subsequent flight
  20.                Of the fox with the egg he had snatched,
  21.                      Desmond tapped on his shell
  22.                           And let out a yell
  23.               For he thought it was time he was hatched.
  24.                     The fox stopped with surprise,
  25.                        And in front of his eyes
  26.                 A small beak appeared through a crack,
  27.                        Then a head, then a leg
  28.                         Appeared from the egg,
  29.                  Then Desmond, who fell on his back.
  30.                         'Look Mummy,' he said,
  31.                      'There's a bump on my head,
  32.                 But I couldn't wait there any longer,
  33.                        And now I've been born,
  34.                     Would you please keep me warm,
  35.               And take care of my till I grow stronger.'
  36.                        The fox shook his head,
  37.                         'I'm sorry,' he said,
  38.                    'But alas there's no going back.
  39.                        I'm a fox, your a duck,
  40.                       That's right out of luck,
  41.                 And I'm taking you home for a snack.'
  42.                         Said Desmond 'Alright,
  43.                        I could do with a bite,
  44.                 But first could you answer my question
  45.                      What are these on my back ?
  46.                       And why can't you quack ?'
  47.               Said the fox, 'You've upset my digestion.
  48.                        I'll take you back home,
  49.                         My heart isn't stone,
  50.                     And life as a duck isn't fun.
  51.                        On the rivers and lakes
  52.                     You can play ducks and drakes,
  53.                    Quite often I wished I was one.'
  54.                         Said Desmond, 'Hooray,
  55.                        What fun, come and play
  56.                Anytime that you're passing and bored.'
  57.                       Said the fox with a smile,
  58.                       'It would be a long while,
  59.                     For foxes are always abroad.'
